What do Bacteria eat?
How do they survive?
Different types of bacteria use different sources of energy to survive. The most basic form is where bacteria, like plants, use light from the Sun to generate energy for growth. These are called phototrophic bacteria. Some of these draw carbon from atmospheric carbon dioxide.
Other bacteria can generate their energy from inorganic compounds like nitrogen and sulphur and are called lithotrophic bacteria. Some of these bacteria might even be anaerobic, which means they do not need oxygen to live and hence are not dependent on atmospheric air for their survival.
There is yet another type of bacteria called organotrophic bacteria; they derive energy from organic compounds. They too can be aerobic or anaerobic.
